TOPOGRAFIAS IMAGINÁRIAS

THE SOUND OF THE CITY IN CINEMA / URBAN SYMPHONY

6th cycle of commented screenings

September 28 | October 19 | November 9 | December 7 2019
FREE ENTRY

The 6th edition of the cycle Topografias Imaginárias will be dedicated to the most forgotten side of cinematic creation crisscrossing with the experience of the city: Sound. Throughout 4 sessions taking place between September and December - one session per month - this cycle of commented screenings will make a journey through the city and cinema: Each film will be commented on in the place where it was shot, thus it will be possible to simultaneously experience the sound of the film and the real city / place where it was made. The cycle starts on September 28th with the most radical sound experience of the program: The film Lisboa, Crónica Anedótica, a monumental portrait of the city made in 1930 by José Leitão de Barros, and one of the last silent films made in Portugal, will be projected outdoors, without sound, the city itself being the one to sound this portrait of the city. This screening will take place at Largo do Calvário. In the following months, the film Belarmino (Fernando Lopes, 1964) will be commented in the Grupo Desportivo da Mouraria (where the main character of the film practiced boxing), the film Kilas, o mau da fita (José Fonseca e Costa, 1980) will be seen in the Casa do Alentejo (where it was partially filmed), and the film A Janela (Maryalva Mix) by Edgar Pêra (2001) will be commented on in the neighbourhood of Bica, in Marítimo Lisboa Clube, Calçada da Bica Grande. The films will be commented by musicians, sound technicians, cinema and city researchers, such as Branko Neskov, José Bértolo, Manuel Deniz Silva, João Pedro Cachopo, Ricardo Vieira Lisboa, Patrícia Castello Branco, among others. Also of note is the launch of the book Um Mapa de Lisboa no Cinema (A Map of Lisbon in the Cinema), edited by the Lisbon Municipal Archive - Video Library with Dafne editora, a book built based on the transcription and remontage of the sessions of Topografias Imaginárias dedicated to architecture. The launch will take place on September 28th, at 19h30, before the open-air screening at Largo do Calvário. The cycle of commentaries on Topografias Imaginárias is organized since 2015 by the Lisbon Municipal Archive - Video Library and it aims to map the meeting between the cinema and the city. To do so, each year, through a specific theme or object, the ways in which cinema not only portrays but reinvents Lisbon are approached and in each session two or three participants are invited to comment on a film from fragments projected during the conversation. Only in the end are the fragments seen in their place and the film is shown in its entirety. The sound of the city in cinema will be the theme of Topografias Imaginárias in the next three cycles, developed in partnership with our research project Fragmentation and reconfiguration: Experiencing the city between art and philosophy (IFILNOVA /FCT).

Following the debate already initiated in the cycle WHAT IS THE ARCHIVE?, viz. on the contemporary definition of Archive, the third and last Laboratory concentrates on the relation between City and Archive. The idea of this Laboratory arises from coming into contact with an area of the city of Lisbon in intense transformation, Marvila, that ostensibly makes it particularly urgent to raise questions about the Archive. Marvila is a vast, complex and heterogeneous territory, difficult to aggregate in a unit. It brings together several neighbourhoods crossed by expressways that turn them into islands. It is also a socially and topographically delicate area, where a rural and industrial past, visible as a ruin, coexists with the construction of social housing or with the recent renewal of economic activities, accompanied by a change in the social fabric of the population and a progressive increase in its real estate value. The notion of Archive will continue to be problematized in its broadest sense, beyond institutional or patrimonial limits, but this time this questioning will be addressed from the point of view of the importance of the Archive for the construction of a place (an inhabited space). Thinking about the city as an Archive immediately raises questions about memory (and forgetfulness); of places, of the absence of an archive, and of how this absence can define a territory. Thinking about the city starting from the Archive also raises questions that concern the control of the archive by public and private institutions, and the relationship with historical time, the creation of expectations, and the museification of space. These issues have become unavoidable in numerous cities, and in Lisbon particularly so.
